Edit: I had this post scheduled for 11am. Within the hour it was announced, the project has reached it’s funding goal of $750,000. And it’s still climbing. Congratulations to the team over at Critical Role.
The masterminds behind Critical Role are turning to Kickstarter to adapt their ultra-successful first campaign into a cartoon.
The breakout D&D show has partnered with animation studio Titmouse to produce a 22-minute animated special. The film, titled “The Legend of Vox Machina”, is an in-canon adaptation of the characters from Critical Role’s first season.
The Kickstarter will run for 45 days, offering exclusive merchandise and rewards for support. The campaign launched today and will close April 18th. But as the campaign reaches certain funding goals, additional 22-minute segments of animation will be “added on”.
This animated project, which touts the same cast of veteran voice actors and actresses from the tabletop show, is undoubtedly certain to find success. Critical Role has done record numbers in the last few years. Last June, the show split from Geek & Sundry to become its own studio.
From the project’s synopsis:
The Avengers are a mighty team. The X-men follow a brilliant leader, the Fantastic 4 are a tight family. Our heroes are NONE of those things. They’re seven loners, outcasts — a bunch of sh*thead sellswords and wands-for-hire who, while literally drunk, accidentally save the town’s ruler and are given their first “grown up” mission. A mission that forces them to live together and pits them against dangerous and legendary beasts — eventually transforming them into a band of adventurers called Vox Machina.
They will become heroes…. If they don’t murder each other first.
Critical Role cast members Travis Willingham and Sam Riegel serve as executive producers, while writer Jennifer Muro has signed on to write.
