Last weekend, famed B-movie actor and horror legend Bruce Campbell (“Army of Darkness,” “Bubba Ho-Tep”) posted on his Twitter account that his cameo role in Sam Raimi’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” has been cut. Campbell had this to tweet:
“My scene in Oz got the axe, but I enjoyed doing a bit yesterday with Mr. James Franco in “Neglect.” Powerhouse stuff. He’s one groovy cat.”
Here is the plot for Raimi’s estimated $200,000,000 fantasy film.
This is a prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by L. Frank Baum, told from the point of view of the Wizard. It tells how the Wizard arrived in Oz and how he became the ruler.
Some critics have complained that this version of “Oz” is too close to Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked” musical, which is set mostly prior to Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and also includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Oz the Great and Powerful” is currently filming and will drop into theaters on March 8th, 2013. The film will star James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Joey King, Zach Braff, Abigail Spencer, Martin Klebba, Ted Raimi, Bill Cobbs, Tony Cox, and Tony Wynne. Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay, from the novel by L. Frank Baum. Sam Raimi directs.
