Alien: Romulus 4K UHD Review: In 4K No One Can Hear You Scream

Alien: Romulus opened up new worlds of the Alien universe and now you can explore them in 4K UHD. It begins on the mining planet which is so full of activity, it’s not purely dark and desolate. Once the characters get on the Romulus and Remus stations is when the deep shadow of space comes into play.

They explore the dark halls of the station with a pure void hiding potential facehuggers or full sized xenomorphs. The bright white lab is a nice contrast to that. There are different colors of darkness too, depending on the condition of each section of the ship. They can be red, blue or a fully coccoooned hall obscuring all light.

In the zero-G sequence, 4K gives you a palpable sense of liquid floating through the air.

The sound of Alien: Romulus envelops you too. The rumble of crashing shuttles, sizzling acid, MU/TH/UR’s announcements and more echo around the room.

Deleted and extended scenes luxuriate on the ship a little bit longer. There is nothing vital but it’s the heart of Alien movies: exploring, wandering, avoiding acid or creatures.

There are lots of bonus features for Alien: Romulus, probably in large part due to director Fede Alvarez and producer Ridley Scott’s interest in filmmaking. It is refreshing to see all the practical modles, including scale shuttles crew members can manipulate. The colony planet is a set and even some of the aliens are still prosthetics.

Alvarez interviews Scott about the original Alien too and even I didn’t know that Scott’s kids play crew members in one scene to make the crashed ship look bigger.
