It’s no surprise this animation looks great in 4K. The painted animals on painted backgrounds give way to bursts of color, from butterfly swarms to Roz’s laser show.
The sound environment is also full. You’ll hear waves crash behind you, birds chirping, flocks flapping around you and lasers.
The extras offer a good mix of filmmaking insight and kid-friendly activities. There are several drawing lessons for the main characters and how to build a kite. That looks fun!
Two deleted scenes show earlier drafts of ideas that ended up fitting better in other places in the movie.
The commentary really goes scene by scene with insights about how they made each sequence and how the story evolved with adaptations from the book. Time lapses were integral for a story centered on the seasons. The filmmakers discuss specific challenges and point out the way they solved the problem, sometimes just by adding a single line.
