Paramount Scares Vol. 2 Review: B4Kdown, Or4Kan and more

This Halloween, Paramount Home Entertainment released their second collection of new 4K UHD horror premieres and catalog pairings. The new upgrades are Friday the 13th Part II, Breakdown and Orphan: First Kill along with the previously available World War Z. It’s a solid mix of slasher and thriller, big budget and low budget.

Friday the 13th 2 looks amazing and bodes well for a complete set. The campgrounds in the deep night offers a pure black backdrop for the stalking and kills. It really makes you appreciate lighting. Even in a low budget movie, they kept the characters lit without compromising the night environment. That goes for the suburban streets of Adrienne King’s home. The camp grounds look gorgeous in the bright daylight too, and interiors show off the film grain.

Surrouns sound gets the rain and a few random sound effects.

World War Z has been on 4K UHD before and it is a perfectly clear, but gritty modern blockbuster. Emergency lighting really holds up and creats silhouettes and shadow pockets.

There are tons of surrounds here from the opening montage to helicopters, explosions, scampering crowds and distant screams throughout.

Breakdown sweats in the blazing desert, though it takes a bit longer than you might expect to get there. Act one stays pretty dry and dusty. It’s only after Kurt Russell takes a dip in the river that he’s under sweaty pressure the rest of the movie.

Fast and furious sound effects surround in this one.

Orphan: First Kill is the newest movie so it’s all digital. Exteriors look good but it can haze up like television inside. But, the de-aging holds up because it’s not CGI. Isabelle Fuhrman is just wearing a costume in oversized sets so she still looks like Esther.
