Slither 4K UHD Review: 4K Gunns

After writing horror movies and family comedies, James Gunn made his directorial debut with this original creature movie. It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years, but fans of his blockbuster work will find much to enjoy in Slither.

A meteor lands in a small town, propagating itself through the locals. Gunn champions makeup effects while incorporating then-innovative CGI, all with a wicked sense of humor about the grossest ways to be infected. It’s got Gunn’s impeccable needle drops too with Air Supply and One From the Heart’s Crystal Gayle!

That 2006 movies were still being shot on 35mm film gives Slither a lush color. Its horror genre trappings are well highlighted in 4K. The meteor in space, the dark forest and barn, small town streets at night, the basement and even the Grants’ (Michael Rooker and Elizabeth Banks) bedroom feature deep shadows.

Surround sound is active too as the meteor whooshes by, Brenda (Brenda James) explodes over the entire room. Sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) and deputies shoot guns in the field in all directions. But, the slithering of the title is the most effective use of sound. When the hive speaks they fill every speaker too. Even Kylie (Tania Saulnier)’s mom (Iris Quinn) speaking through the door is a rear effect.

The new 20th anniversary bonus features are the chance for cinematographer Gregory Middleton, editor John Axelrad, makeup effects designer Todd Masters, and composer Tyler Bates’ time to shine. Gunn gives a substantial 30-minute interview from the previous Scream Factory special edition.
