Hollywood’s Bombs of Summer 2010

Normally when compiling the list of the worst of summer’s offerings you have to make a few tough decisions in order to come up with ten titles worthy of listing as having no worth. Well the summer of 2010 was an exception. It seemed in short order that as the heat rose outside the quality of movies dropped inside theaters. Some film journalists noted the poor nature of a surprising number of films, and as it turns out they were not simply being a bunch of cranks. Ten titles were easily picked for this list – and it was still only June!

That’s not to say there were no success stories, and a few surprises were to be seen as well. “Inception” made a mint as expected, likewise another “Shrek” installment printed money, and “Toy Story 3” only went on to become the most successful animated film in the world. But who would have guessed the reboot of “The Karate Kid” would become a smash? And while I doubt too many predictions were Read the rest of this entry »

Unfortunately, for fans of the “Dr. Strange” character, Stan Lee and his entourage are puzzled by these rumors, because he has no knowledge whatsoever of such a project being made.

The real news is that Stan Lee, Marvel Comics legend, will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 4, 2011.  So, pass the word!

There you have it!  So don’t get too exited about a “Dr. Strange” movie yet!  However, do get excited about Stan “The Man” getting his star on the Walk of Fame.  See you there in January true believers!

The Labor Day Weekend Numbers

A Yankee and a Mexican battle it out for the top spot, and they nearly get toppled by a derivative holdover in its second round.  The last weekend of the summer is traditionally a weak one for receipts, as families tend to do things that bond them together a little more than sitting silent in the dark for a couple of hours.  They certainly didn’t want to watch Drew Barrymore fall in love with her on-again off-again real life lover Justin Long.

As always the summer blockbuster season ended with a whimper, with no new openers coming close to cracking $20 million, even with an extra day to sell tickets.  A big-name actor and an overly hyped pulp actioner were greeted with a shrug.  So take a look over the list of what you missed while cooking out and watching wall-to-wall coverage of college football’s opening schedule.  All totals are for the four-day holiday weekend.

1.  The American ($16.1million)    George Clooney has Read the rest of this entry »
