The 2009 Zack Snyder-directed film The Watchmen, based on the famous graphic novel, might be coming back to the silver screen in animated form.

According to Digital Spy, Watchmen may be adapted to the silver screen with an R rating by Warner Animation after the release of their last R-Rated animated film Batman: The Killing Joke.

FilmBuffOnline released an online market survey published by Warner Bros. which stated that they were working on “a faithful adaptation of the Watchmen graphic novel executed in an animation style that mirrors the source material.” Warner has also stated that they are lobbying for an R rating.

Other possible adaptations included in the survey are Batman: The Long Halloween, Lucifer, Sandman, Preacher, Red Sun and Afterlife with Archie. No word on whether Warner is going ahead with these plans yet or not.

Zack Snyder has been lobbying for a limited television series based on The Watchmen on HBO since the movie adaptation in 2009, which has since become a cult movie.
