New Characters Featured in Joss Whedon’s “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Television Show

MTV had a chance to interview writer/director Joss Whedon (“The Avengers”) at the Toronto Film Festival. He had a lot to say about the new “S.H.I.E.L.D” television project, and how the show will feature a new cast of characters.

This is what Whedon had to say:

“It’s new characters. It needs to be its own thing. It needs to be adjacent [to the Marvel Universe] but you don’t want to do a show where you’re constantly going, ‘Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.’”

Whedon said the characters need to do their own thing, even though they don’t have powers. He explained:

“That makes them a little bit — even though they’re a big organization — underdogs, and that’s interesting to me.”

Whedon will co-pen the pilot alongside his brother Jed Whedon, and his wife, Maurissa Tancharoen, who all previously teamed on the three-part web series “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” With time permitting, Joss Whedon will direct the pilot.

Production on the live-action project will begin immediately, with Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen executive producing alongside Jeffrey Bell, and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

Hopefully, Whedon can create an entertaining and quirky program with his brand of magic, which stays away from a possible skyrocketing budget.

Without knowing too much about the characters, who do you think should be cast in the series?
