T.A.R.D.I.S., sonic screwdriver, and Time Lord are familiar words or phrases that fans of Doctor Who would easily identify. Holding the records for being the most-watched series ever on BBC America and the most downloaded on iTunes, the good Doctor is getting another television movie. Remember, the series went into hiatus in 1989, and Hollywood and the BBC tried to reboot it with a television movie entitled “Doctor Who” in 1996, which starred Paul McGann as the Doctor, and Eric Roberts as the Master. The presentation was met with a lukewarm response and the Doctor was trapped in limbo until producer Russell T. Davies gave the T.A.R.D.I.S and the newest incarnation of the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) a proper re-launch in 2005.

Now, the Doctor will be the subject of a 90-minute drama, “An Adventure In Space And Time,” documenting the genesis of the character. The BBC says the special will air next year. “Doctor Who” was first broadcast on November 23, 1963 and has gone through myriad incarnations with at least 11 different actors playing the Doctor, beginning with William Hartnell and including Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and the current Matt Smith. Mark Gatiss, whose credits include “Doctor Who” and the BBC series “Sherlock,” wrote the film. The executive producers are Steven Moffat and Caroline Skinner. The latest season of “Doctor Who” starts in the United Kingdom this month with BBC America airing the episodes this fall.
