From the early 1920′s to the mid 1940′s a series of short one to two reel films followed a group of kids known as “Our Gang,” which eventually morphed into “The Little Rascals” when they debuted on television in the 1950′s. Creator Hal Roach had such notable characters as Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Porky, Butch, Woim, Weezer, Chubby, Jackie, Farina, Stymie, Mary, Froggy, Petey, and Darla, and to his credit the films were a success.
In 1994, Universal Pictures rebooted the series after 50 years of silence with a feature film which was panned by critics, but accepted by moviegoers. Even though it was a poor clone of the original series, it did generate revenue. Now Universal Pictures has decided to see if lightning does indeed strike twice.
“The Little Rascals” is currently being cast and will begin production in Los Angeles sometime in September. Director Alex Zamm will be helming the project. Zamm is best known for his straight-to-DVD sequels like “Inspector Gadget 2,” “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2,” and the “Tooth Fairy 2.”
Is this a good idea, or is it time to join the He-Man Woman Haters Club? Otay!
