Michael ‘MPsy’ here…

There’s a bit of a rumor floating around in the Star Trek community about the role actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) will take on in the new Star Trek movie from J.J. Abrams (Star Trek and Super 8). Simon Pegg (Paul and The Aventures of Tintin) who portrayed the engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in the first film squashes rumors that Cumberbatch will be the genetically engineered super human madman. In an interview with ‘The Telegraph‘ Pegg takes time to vent a bit to denounce such rumors.

“It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me — it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them. (via The Telegraph)”

In an interview with Benedict Cumberbatch himself he refuses to reveal anything at all about his role.

“One of the best four months of my life. It was just solid extraordinary fun from beginning to end. JJ Abrams is a god. And the rest of the cast and what we were asked to do in the film is blindingly brilliant. I adore them all. It was a huge roller-coaster adventure and I can’t wait for the world to see the film. I can’t tell you anything about it, even what part I am playing. There is all sorts of speculation about all sorts of characters. It would be kind of spoiling it for everyone if I clarified anything. So I am going to leave it with a smile. (via Trek Movie)”

Star Trek 2 is due out in theatres in 2D and 3D on May 17, 2013. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Weller, Alice Eve, and Noel Clarke. Directed by J.J. Abrams.

I loved the first Star Trek film reboot, very well done, besides the blaring light streaks in most of the shots. With all the reboots done thus far in the last 10 years, I think Star Trek beats them all, and I can’t wait for the sequel, it might be the biggest film of the summer.

Stumbled upon you blog late… I wish Pegg would spread his sentiment over the internets more.  As a Trek fan and as a person who liked the reboot, no idea is more horrible to me than making Star Trek with Khan.

Reason being:  Even though its technically a ‘reboot’, the story in ST1 was ALL NEW.  All new.  It wasn’t a REMAKE or RETELLING of anything we’d seen (in TV or film) before.  Going from such a great concept in the first film into simply re-hashing an old villain is just horrible.  The WHOLE point of the reboot was to get some creative leeway to tell NEW stories, not make up slightly altered versions of stuff we already saw.
