Part of the new “52’s” storyline is another alternate universe known as Earth 2 in the DC world, which focuses on DC’s top three heroes in a war against a race called the Parademons. Humans and heroes alike have all been slaughtered and the only ones left to combat the threat are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
Issue #1 begins deep in the Apokolips War, where Metropolis has already been destroyed. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman have been endlessly fighting wave after wave of Parademons, and Batman finally discovers a way to end the war. Wonder Woman is the last Amazon alive and it seems even the gods of Olympus are falling. Superman has lost everyone and everything and hope dwindles, but Batman realizes if he fails the world will end. The heroes fight, but they can only do so much.
Finally an enjoyable alternate universe comic, it displays how far heroes will go to protect the world even at the cost of their own lives. It even shows a small side of Batman we all know is there when he orders his daughter to escape.
James Robinson had plenty to work with and did a admirable job. It’s pretty amusing to see a whole army get taken down by targeting their location and wiping them out, but it was really by Batman’s skill and brains that the team managed to win, showing you Batman is always the man.
Also watch for Nicola Scott’s art style as you can notice the different approach she takes in portraying Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. By collaborating with James Robinson, the two bring some dark light to this comic. Overall this comic is a nice pick me up, because this might be the only time the main heroes actually stay dead.
While the three fallen heroes managed to put a stop to the Parademons, it seems the worst is still yet to come…
