Did Christopher Nolan Stick It In Joss Whedon’s Eye With THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Trailer?

Posted on May 1 2012 - 1:35am by Namtar.

Namtar here…

Recently, I released a brief review of “The Avengers.” I was shocked by how ordinary the plot was, and how the infighting between the heroes was unbelievable and forced into the script, but that’s my opinion.  Let me state this, “The Batman trailer has made me forget this generic piece of garbage.”  Fans are crazed for “The Avengers” because it’s the hip thing to be in love with at the moment.  Now, Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” has “The Avengers” on the ropes and Nolan has stuck his finger into Joss Whedon’s eye by reminding moviegoers that “The Dark Knight Rises” is on the horizon and poised to be the film of the summer.  With Nolan’s flair, he will serve a layered arc of storytelling, which will give audiences something to think about.

Here is what I think will happen based on the trailer.

“There’s a storm coming.”  That storm is Bane.  Bane is the ultimate military and psychological strategist and a finely tuned physical machine.  He is more than Batman’s equal, and he has come to Gotham City to finish the job Ra’s al Ghul failed to accomplish in “Batman Begins.”

Bane attacks and terrorizes Gotham on all levels.  From the fans and players of a high school football game to traffic on one of the city’s bridges to the stock exchange, no one is made to feel safe. Bane is so brazen, he launches a direct assault on Gotham’s own police department.

Early on, Bane breaks Batman’s body and spirit.  He holds a piece of Batman’s mask, which he casually tosses aside.  So, how can Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman hope to recover his soul?  With the dedicated people who surround him.

A measure of a person’s worth is the loyalty of their friends.  So, who are Batman’s friends?  Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Lucius Fox, Selina Kyle (Catwoman,) and maybe a few members of Gotham’s Police Force.  Bruce Wayne/Batman will reinvent themselves.  With the aid of a few gadgets and some detective work, Batman will match Bane, but what will be the price?

Christopher Nolan will have you waiting until July.  Until then, you can chew on your popcorn!

“The Dark Knight Rises” will be released on July 20th, 2012.  The film will star Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Josh Stewart, Nestor Carbonell, Alon Abutbul, Liam Neeson, Matthew Modine, Tom Conti, Joey King, Christopher Judge, Brett Cullen, Chris Ellis, Rob Brown, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  Christopher and Jonathan Nolan wrote the screenplay, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.  Christopher Nolan directs.

Couldn’t agree more.  I was so let down by The Avengers… all of this time growing up on Marvel comics waiting for this and we got a despicably generic plot.   I wasn’t looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises at all until the second trailer, but I still wasn’t that excited.  Then this last came out, and I’ve converted.  Chris Nolan will top TDK. The Dark Knight Rises will be amazing.

The Avengers will be better since they don’t die and batman/brude wayne does. What a horrible idea to kill the superhero we all grew up on. I will walk out the theater before the end, so I don’t see Batman get passed on to jospeh gordon levitt. Stupid wy to end an epic trilogy.

    • deshawn

Bruce dies a number of times in the comics infact fans wanted him to die a while ago and if not for his good stories fans wouldn’t accept his return. You’re looking for a generic peice of shit film that doesn’t end then fine but some of us want the story to actually feel like an ending so we don’t get crap like batman and robin where they continue when it should have ended.

You’re an idiot, this is a trilogy… Fucking stupid

    • Ted_mongel

“The Avengers will be better since they don’t die and batman/bruce wayne does.” Good Lord, what a stupid comment. One, that’s an incredibly stupid reason to begin with, it’s a three part story, not a never-ending, keep shoving out movies based on this story line until they’re as stupid as any Resident evil sequel, and two, you have no idea if Bruce Wayne dies. The trailer/story line could just be using that to advance to suspense.

    • JohnBergman85

The Avengers characters died all the time in comics. Whose to say none of them will die by the third film?

    • Hellraiser2020

this is fucking hilarious because now we know that Bruce Wayne doesn’t die

  • Bruise Brother

What suspense is there when the hero has no possiblility of dying.  That ruined “Temple of Doom,” because it happened before “Raiders.”  I knew Indy wouldn’t die.  “The Avengers” is the same.  It all glamour and posturing.  It’s an overglorified runway show.  Taaa Daaa!

    • Rehabdoc

As opposed to batman and all the other action movies where the hero dies each time?

“The Batman trailer has made me forget this generic piece of garbage.” Did THE AVENGERS rape your mother or something? Jesus.

So by your logic, I am not allowed to hate Hitler unless I have had my mother personally raped by him?

What kind of idiot are you?

  • Loveknightlife

I saw the trailer with the Avengers movie and it not only did not ruin Avengers it actual made me less excited about Batman. I had already seen Avengers with my son on Friday and he wanted to tell his mom about it so much we took her Sunday morning. The trailer was with this showing not the first and all it did was show what always happens to trilogies.

As I watched the Batman trailer I saw a Bane that I knew should not have been the villain. He looks under whelming and actually cartoonish. I love what the series has done and will keep my fingers crossed but the rogues gallery of Bane, Catwoman, whoever the heck Levitt is, The Demons Head and by extension the League of Shadows, along with the very dark and serious story arc that KnightFall was and this looks to be too much for a single movie.

Now Avengers also looked to be too much story for me. Yet with the single character movies and this origin movie just being about them coming together without the back story, which is actually set up in the other movies, it really worked. It runs 2hrs 33 min and could have only added maybe 20 mins for more depth. It was funny (I think Joss is to thank for that), sad, exciting and really follows the comic book themes without feeling really funnypaperish. Was it perfect? No. Was it a great summer movie were a bunch of characters who everyone wants to see together get together in an interesting and fun way? Yes.

Now the important question. Will I see Avengers more than once in the theater? Already did.

Will I see Batman more than once in theaters? No. Even if it works better than I think it will and I think it is incredible, from the past two movies the answer is still no. Once I see it the story will be told. It has an art house feel. Will it make me think? Maybe, but Batman comics do that. Will I need to see it again for background information or to catch dialogue I missed? Nope.

Did Nolan stick it in Whedons eye? God I hope not because with the numbers Avengers is pulling down Joss might be able to stick Nolan with something else and the movie studios would just look the other way.

    • Johnny

“I saw a Bane that I knew should not have been the villain.”

      He’s not.

      • JohnBergman85

        Then who is?

  • Bruise Brother

Joss Whedon can’t hold a candle to Nolan’s ass to light his gas.  Nolan is the master here.  Whedon’s Avengers could have defeated the aliens with ingenuity and pure brute force, but Whedon decided to end the battle early and fall back on a solution that was trite.  In other words, why isn’t anyone talking about the FACT that the alien invaders were brought down by the destruction of their control ship.  I’m tired of this crappy plot.  Like Namtar wrote, I saw this in Phantom Menace and Independence Day.  Find some other way for fuck’s sake!

    • Dick Fury

“Joss Whedon can’t hold a candle to Nolan’s ass to light his gas.” Best quote ever. I’m still laughing 20 minutes after reading it. Incidentally, Avengers was entertaining, but Batman Begins was a far better picture for those of us that care about story and character development. By the way, Thor sucks a$$. Chris Hemlock is seemed more CGI than Hulk. His acting was almost as bad as Sam Jackson’s.

  • v0a

Some people like good storytelling, some people like constant flashy cgi so you have a choice…

the avengers was a great movie it had its problems it book a while to get the ball rolling (but that was to be expected) hawkeye and thor were under used  and iron man a little over used. but the was a great team dynamic and all the characters even the super powered gods from another relam had a great human quality to them and the death of a smaller but much loved character being the event that brought the team together was a clever and unexpected move (since seeing avengers i have brushed up on his works and if i had been familiar with his style earlier i might have expected the death) finally the movies comic releif was witty well timed brillently exicuted and didn’t feel forced like i does in must super hero movies e.g Ghost Rider 1 & 2 blade trinity the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy and the fantasic four both movies (with the exeption of chris evans’s one liners)

  • Durkaoo

Well, I have always thought Marvel characters were just so much better
than DC on all levels.  What Nolan has done with Batman is stunning, but
Bane in this movie pretty much has me forgetting about it.  I was super
psyched for TDK, and it was awesome.  I honestly am not anticipating
this 3rd movie at all, like to the point I probably won’t spend the
money to see it in the theater and will wait for Redbox or something.
The Avengers was INCREDIBLE, the infighting was EXACTLY what should have
been there with all these clashing personalities and egos.  Calling the
movie “garbage” just makes me see you as a Nolan fanboy to a sickening
degree.  I hope he pays you for these posts you make because if they
are  actually your own opinions, you lose a whole lot of credibility.

In other words, SUCK MY COCK YOU NOLAN FANBOI.

    • Pb3542

you will be watching it within a week of it opening.  I call shenanigans on your bullshit

    • Okung Nyo

TDKR was shot in IMAX, which must been seen in theaters, and the experience of which cannot be replicated by even the best-equipped of home theaters.

The Avengers is just another generic CGI-filled bullshit that is not worthy even of a drive-in theater.

  • Durkaoo

And where exactly in Nolans batman films is this “great storytelling”?  Sorry, I just don’t see it.  The ONLY thing in the Nolan trilogy worth anything was Ledger’s Joker performance.  Why did the Joker do the things he did?  “Because he is crazy”.  Yeah fantastic storytelling.  Like seriously, name ONE aspect of Nolan’s bat movies that was “in depth”, that was ACTUALLY in depth and not just a dramatic veneer covering a hollow pointless storyline.  The only reason people say “wow its brilliant blah blah” is because he made the film a little more believable instead of campy like previous bat movies.  In truth, there is absolutely nothing special about the Nolan trilogy AT ALL.

So…the argument is “‘The Avengers’ sucks and ‘Batman’ will be better because [insert trailer synopsis here].”

I haven’t seen Avengers, but I eventually will, so I’ve no dog in this fight, but this is a terrible article.

  • Darren Skyhighcomics

You are on crack….I LOVED LOVED the 1st 2 of Nolans trilogy…and can say without a doubt..I have NO CONFIDENCE in this movie at all….will hands down be the worst of the trilogy. I have seen absolutely nothing that makes me excited to see this movie. Bane is a frakkin joke…and has been for almost 20 years…he was interesting and relevant in 93 for 6 months…then became a throwaway joke. Avengers was without question the greatest comic book movie ever made

  • Kjohnnyt

A high school football game is not played in a giant arena you fool. Also avengers was a solid film. Imagine how hard it was to bring all those characters from different films and adding them into one film… You can’t because you’re obviously not a filmmaker or writer… I am, and an award winning one at that. And I can yell you that what joss did is no easy feat. He did an incredible job and way better than I thought it was going to be. That being said yes nolans batman will also be great.

  • jfwong

this is a very poorly written article – calling out the quality of Avengers and why people enjoy it because it’s the “hip thing to in love with at the moment” is an incredibly short sighted, emotional, and impulsive statement based on nothing more than personal opinion.

Great job with that top photoshop’d photo though. Love the typography and layout of nuke the fridge .com

Wow. What a rude thing to say.

When The Avengers an enormous box office success, Joss Whedon penned a letter to his fanbase saying that there was no need for people to compare his superhero film work to Nolan’s, that their successes are a boon to each other, and that Nolan was among the people who invented the true superhero flick. It’s not a competition, if for no other reason than because they are, tone-wise, on opposite ends of the superhero genre spectrum. TDKR is dark and brooding, Avengers is fun and humorous, and they are both going to be regarded as successes.
