Cameron To Recycle ‘The Abyss’ As ‘Avatar 2′

Posted on Apr 20 2010 - 7:42pm by Jason Nicholl

In an interview with the LA Times, James Cameron hints at what we will see with “Avatar 2.”  And guess what?  We already saw it over 20 years ago when it was called “The Abyss.”  Wow, Cameron really is just recycling old ideas isn’t he?

Cameron says, “I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”

So is it just me, or does Cameron really seem out of ideas?

Not necessarily. So far the only similarity we really know of is that they take place in an ocean setting, and that is pretty broad.

yeah…this could be cool…like the fridge said…the ocean is a big place. Are the Humans coming back do you think? Or is it going to all be the smurfs?

Who cares, if it's a fun movie? Entertainment > originality. Also, the prospect of seeing more Neytiri – possibly wet Neytiri – makes me happy.

  • Kaito32

well I guess it'll continue to be visually stunning? haha.

  • zombiefang

Please, Jason. I know you have always been anti Avatar just like other haters. It doesn't sound like Abyss to me. Just because it takes place in the Ocean, doesn't mean it is like The Abyss. Write something else if you want to bash it.

Oh dear Lord, Jason! Just because it's in the ocean does not mean he's rehashing old story lines. Like thefridge said, the ocean is pretty broad, not to mention a broad topic! While I like the idea of visiting new places in Pandora, I just pray to God it doesn't become too gimmicky. I mean, if it just seems way TOO different, it's going to lose all the magic of what Avatar was all about. And I just couldn't stand to have that happen to one of my favourite movies.

I think your extrapolation is a bit of a stretch. The visuals of his movies, as important and epic as they tend to be, cannot be confused with the plot of the movie. That said, I'll be nearly shocked if the sequel is actually an original plot, but does it really matter? That's not the point of a Cameron movie and so few movies are original, anyway.

cameron is just obessed with the ocean, that's all. abyss, titanic, the titanic documentary, and then the plant life on pandora- he already said was based on some of the creatures and plants of the sea. so now he either has to really stretch his imagination to come up with new critters and plants for the seas of pandora, or it will be more of the same. 'oooooh- things that open up…oooooh- things that light up….'
    meh.

All I'm saying is that 'Avatar' was such a retread of other stories. There was no originality. And as travispitts says, he is obsessed with the Ocean. So it makes me wonder if with Avatar 2, is he just going to rehash plot lines from other ocean based movies, like the Abyss. Cameron is a visionary when it comes to the technical sides of things, but since Terminator 2, I think he has lost a step creatively speaking storywise.

the big questions are- is there another race in the sea? do the na'vi deal with/know about them- or are they just aquatic na'vi?
does this mean we will have to sit through headache inducing water distortion/particle effects if front of scenes for most of the movie?
2 guesses what the flick will be about: the human corporation 'somehow missed' a vast deposit of unobtanium in the ocean, even though their previous scan basically narrowed it all down to one tree on the entire moon. they come back to drill it out and pollute the oceans again riling up the costal/aquatic na'vi or awakening deep sea lifeforms ala ABYSS….
    OR
a war between land and sea na'vi and this time the humans must act as the peacekeepers/negotiators meanwhile bargaining for some natural resource, again ending up betraying both sides or using them against each other, supplying arms, etc…just as cameron would say white america has done with rival tribes and countries all over the world.

i mean really- we know cameron's opinions and thought process about class and environmentalism, so anything else would surprise the shit out of me.

btw- i used to be known as zombot – somehow i lost that profile in the site change, and apparently i already had an account with this kind of service under my real name….so for what it's worth, equate me with the old zombot opinions.

@travispitts… sorry about the name change loss. It was a sacrifice I had to make. You can also sign in with facebook or twitter if you prefer.

Obsessed with the ocean? Okay, The Abyss… But, err… Where the fuck was he supposed to set Titanic? The Old West? Come on. It's easy to say how shit and trite the film will be now, a year or two out from any real info on the project. Zombot, you are literally criticising the film based on a synopsis you invent in the previous sentence. Madness!

    • travispitts

titanic being set on the seas was a given- but then he's done films on exploring the wreckage, as well as documentaries on undersea life. check them out. he's is also literally quoted as saying alot of the plant life in the pandora jungle were based on deep sea worms, plants, jellyfish, etc.
      so there you go.
