Is Cameron’s Avatar Really Worth It?

I know I put “Avatar” on my list of the top 10 movies of the year, but that was mainly because 2009 really didn’t have that many great movies and I was commending the movie for its breakout 3D technology than anything. Story wise, the movie is only so-so.

Yet, James Cameron’s sci-fi epic has just passed the $1 Billion mark worldwide and is currently the fourth most successful film of all-time. Domestically the movie has grossed over $350 million in just 3 weeks and looks like it has a legitimate chance to overtake Cameron’s very own “Titanic” as the biggest box office champion in history. Granted I would love to see just about any movie overtake “Titanic” (How did that movie become the most successful movie ever?), but is “Avatar” really worth it?

What is bringing people to the theater in droves to see this thing? Is it just the 3D? Seriously, if “Avatar” and “Titanic” both end up as the two most successful movies of all-time I think it is a sad commentary on the taste of movie going audiences that make movies like this and the “Transformers” movies wildly popular while ignoring much better movies like “The Wrestler” and “Up In the Air.”

What do you think? Does ‘Avatar’ deserve to be the box office champ?
